FOCUSED ON ABSOLUTE QUALITY

When talking about Uruguayan wine, it is impossible not to mention Bodega Familia Deicas. These wines have crossed many borders and represented Uruguayan winemaking around the world, winning prizes such as the Gold Medal at the prestigious Bacchus Wine International Competition in Spain. Therefore, it is a great destination for anyone interested in learning about the winemaking process and the history of Uruguayan wines.

The winery is located near the city of Canelones, at approximately 30 miles from the country's capital, Montevideo. This region is known for having some of the best wines in Uruguay, and to a large extent, Bodega Familia Deicas is responsible for this. Ever since it was founded, this winery has focused on making fine wines with superb quality which have conquered the palates of even the harshest critics.

Bodega Familia Deicas was founded in 1979 when Juan Carlos Deicas acquired Establecimiento Juanicó and completely reformed it into a winery. Soon after acquiring this land, a series of studies were performed on its soil to determine which grape varieties could grow on it. These studies reported that the soil in this region had the same properties as the soil from Bordeaux, France, which meant that cultivating the noble French varieties in Uruguay was possible.

Since the beginning, the main focus of Bodega Familia Deicas has been quality. This focus on doing things in the best way possible led to the birth of Preludio in 1992. This wine is the star of Bodega Familia Deicas. It is stored for 24 months in barrels inside of an underground wine cellar under strict levels of temperature and humidity. This one-of-a-kind wine cellar was built in stone in the year 1745 and is a historic patrimony.

If you are just interested in tasting the incredible wines, there are three options for you: the Atlantic, History and Iconics tasting. The Atlantic tasting is the most affordable one and features the wines from the Atlántico Sur and Single Vineyard lines, along with an individual tray of cheeses, cold cuts, artisanal bread, and extra virgin olive oil.

The History tasting focuses on the Jesuit heritage of Bodega Familia Deicas. These were the owners of Establecimiento Juanicó for many years before Juan Carlos Deicas. In this tasting, you will enjoy some of their best wines, in true Jesuit fashion along with the foods they used to eat.

Finally, the Iconics tasting while being the most expensive is certainly worth the price. During this guided tasting, you will try the most iconic wines from Bodega Deicas. The wines which have won prizes around the world. You will enjoy a total of six wines which include Preludio, Massimo and Cru d'Exception, along with some snacks.

Bodega Familia Deicas is a must-see for anyone visiting Uruguay, and its proximity to Montevideo allows a quick road trip from the capital.
