uruguay’s unique VARIETIES

Uruguay is a land in which the wide variety of wines caters to every taste. A wide number of wines can be found here. Uruguay has a large offer of white wine flavors. White wines, in general, stand out for how light their taste can be. Furthermore, they are considered refreshing, which can be perfect during the summer months. In general white wines are better when they are younger, as they have greater acidity and their flavor stands out more than when they are aged.

The whites

Some white wine varieties found in Uruguay are the Albariño and the Sauvignon Blanc, along with classics such as the Chardonnay and the Pinot Grigio. The Albariño is known for its fruity flavor, in which lemon, grapefruit, nectarine, and melon hints can be savored. They also have a high level of acidity, and they are not too dry.

The Sauvignon Blanc is similar to the Albariño in its acidity and fruity taste. However, the highlights of this wine are associated with passion fruit, green melon, white peach, and grapefruit.

The Reds

There is also a great array of red wines to be found in this country. While classics such as Merlot, Malbec, and Cabernet Sauvignon are offered, less well-known wines such as Cabernet Franc and Syrah stand out. But one of the favorites in Uruguay is the Tannat.

Unlike Tannat in other regions, the ones produced in Uruguay are usually quite different in character, being lighter in body and less acidic, yielding a dry powerful red wine that tastes of plums and blackberries.

The Cabernet Franc is a medium-bodied wine with high acidity and a fruity taste. Furthermore, it’s high in tannins, with a mix of fruity and spicy undertones. Red pepper, strawberry, red plum, and gravel form the complex amalgam of flavors present in this wine.

Another wine that stands out in Uruguay is the rarer Syrah. This wine has undertones of milk chocolate, blueberry, tobacco, and green peppercorn. It has a full body, and it’s high in acidity with a fruity flavor. It has a higher alcohol content than other wines, so drink with care!
