A Charming Retreat

Sacromonte is one of the most unique wineries in the world. In fact, more than a winery it feels like a spiritual retreat. It is located in the Sierra de Carapé in Maldonado, just an hour away from José Ignacio but it feels like an entirely different planet. The landscape will take your breath away, with the vineyard contrasting with the Uruguayan mountains. This is the perfect destination for those who love nature, the outdoors and remote locations. Here you will find the peace you've been looking for. Even Time Magazine named it one of the greatest places in the world in 2019.

Being located in an Uruguayan mountain, Sacromonte has specific characteristics in its soil such as an abundance of mica and granita shales. These are responsible for providing many minerals to the vines, so that grape production is the best possible. Also, this winery works with grape varieties that were imported from the best parts of France, specifically from Avignon, Champagne, and Vix. This is the reason why Sacromonte wines are considered so high-end.

The winery sells 2 types of wine: Reserve Tannat and Carapé. The first one has a strong expression of fruit and a soft balance of tannins and wood, while Carapé is a blend of all the planted varieties in the vineyard: Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Tannat, Marselan, and Syrah.

Along with a passion for wine, Sacromonte also shows a love for architecture. This is most notable with their "shelters", 4 very modern rooms that are part of a boutique hotel that operates in the winery. This hotel works year-round and it offers an unforgettable experience. The shelter walls are made of a reflective material that reflects everything on the outside and lets you see the magnificence of nature from the inside. This way, these structures don't modify the landscape, which is one of the main attractions of the winery.

Aside from staying in this hotel, Sacromonte offers other activities that could be done by people who don't wish to stay the night. These are available every Saturday and Sunday, from autumn to spring. The most popular option is the dull-day in Sacromonte. It starts at 11:00 am and lasts 5 hours. It includes a 1-hour hike through the vineyards, a guided tour of the vineyard on an electric buggy, lunch and a wine tasting. This may be too much even for some people, and in these cases, the last option would be lunch, which begins at 1:30 pm and includes chopped focaccia, freshly slaughtered lamb roast, organic vegetables from the garden, dessert, water, coffee, and tea. Another activity that is offered in this area is horse-back riding. This will help you relax and keep your mind off things. After all, we all need some relaxation every once in a while.

Sacromonte is known for being very nature-friendly, with sustainability and appreciation for nature being its fundamental values. This leads them to a respectful use of resources, with practices such as recycling water, and the use of renewable energy. Also, they have developed organic produce in the wineries garden, which is used to feed guests.

This destination is best for people who are looking forward to escaping their reality for a little bit. While staying in the mountains, it is hard to remember what stressed you out back at home. In the mountains, everything looks beautiful and being able to drink high-end wine while disconnecting feels amazing. As you can see, going to Sacromonte means getting away from the world. This rudimentary versus modern approach of the winery is executed beautifully through the contrast between the shelters and the surrounding nature.
